What Is the HireVue Flashback Game?

Flashback is an adaptive n-back task. Track a continuous stream of shapes, compare each scoreable item with the one shown N steps earlier, and add color to the comparison when the level requires it.

The Core Task

Track a continuous stream and decide whether each current item matches the one shown N steps earlier.

Why the Exact N-Back Position Matters

A shape can feel familiar because it appeared one position too early or too late. Reliable decisions come from comparing with the exact N-back item.

What This Practice Focuses On

This practice focuses on working memory, sequence tracking, attention, and controlled decisions under time pressure. These are practice targets, not official employer score categories.

What to Expect During Flashback Practice

One Interactive Demo Challenge

The free demo shows a short 1-back sequence. You compare the current shape with the previous one and receive brief feedback. Demo activity is not saved to your practice history.

Full Timed Practice

Full practice uses a three-minute continuous sequence. It begins with shape-only 1-back and adapts through shape-and-color 1-back, 2-back, and 3-back rules as you respond.

Independent Practice Feedback

The result summary reports only performance inside this practice product. It is not a HireVue score, does not reveal an employer's scoring model, and cannot predict a hiring decision.

HireVue Flashback Tips

Build Short Mental Labels

Label each item briefly, such as blue circle or red star. Short labels are easier to keep in the correct order as the sequence moves forward.

Maintain a Rolling Buffer

Hold only the last N items, drop the oldest when a new one appears, and keep the sequence positions stable.

Do Not Chase Lures

A familiar item may have appeared one position too early or too late. Compare against the exact N-back slot rather than familiarity.

Answer Before the Item Disappears

No response counts as incorrect. Commit to Match or No Match while the current item is still visible, then continue tracking the stream.

Understanding Your Flashback Practice Results

The result summary reports only activity from this independent practice. It is not an official HireVue score and cannot predict an employer decision.

Accuracy

The percentage of submitted n-back decisions answered correctly.

Correct and Incorrect Decisions

Correct decisions identify whether the current item matches the exact N-back target. Incorrect decisions include misses, false alarms, and missed responses.

Decisions Submitted

The total number of scoreable n-back items reached before the timer ended. Review this together with accuracy rather than treating volume alone as success.

Average Response Time

The average time between a scoreable item appearing and your Match or No Match selection.

Practice results are independent feedback and are not an official HireVue score.

HireVue Flashback Game FAQ

What does Flashback practice?

This independent task can be used to practice working memory, sequence tracking, attention, and response control. These are practice targets, not official HireVue score categories.

What is a good Flashback score?

There is no universal public passing score for every employer or role. Compare your own attempts using accuracy, response time, and the highest adaptive tier reached under the same practice conditions.

Do I need gaming experience?

No. The controls are limited to Match and No Match. Useful preparation focuses on maintaining the correct N-back position and responding before each item disappears.

How closely does this practice follow the HireVue Flashback format?

It follows the core n-back interaction: decide whether each item matches the one shown a specified number of steps earlier as the comparison rule changes. HireVueGames creates its own shapes, sequences, interface, and feedback, so this is format practice rather than an exact copy of HireVue's assessment.
