Both a compatible phone and a computer can be used for HireVue games. There is no single device that is automatically best for every candidate, game, and assessment. Follow the instructions in your invitation first, then choose the supported device that gives you a stable connection, clear game display, and accurate controls.
HireVue describes its game-based assessments as mobile-friendly. Its current candidate support documentation also makes an important device-specific recommendation: when candidates experience blurry, distorted, or poorly rendered game elements, the HireVue for Candidates mobile app is the first recommended option. If you prefer a computer, HireVue recommends Firefox or Safari for those display problems, or disabling hardware acceleration when using Chrome or Edge.
This means the practical answer is not simply “always use a laptop.” A computer may give you a larger display, mouse, and physical keyboard, while the mobile app may provide the more reliable rendering path for some games and devices. The best choice is the one you have tested before the real assessment.
This guide reflects HireVue candidate documentation checked in July 2026. Device and browser requirements can change, so confirm the latest requirements in your invitation and the official Candidate Help Center before beginning.
Phone or Computer: Quick Recommendation
Use this table as a starting point rather than an absolute rule.
| Your situation | Better first option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your invitation explicitly recommends a device or app | Follow the invitation | Employer-specific instructions take priority |
| You see blurry characters or distorted game elements on Windows Chrome or Edge | HireVue mobile app, Firefox, or Safari | These are HireVue’s current game-specific troubleshooting recommendations |
| You want the largest view of grids, shapes, or small details | Computer | A larger display can make visual information easier to inspect |
| You rely on a physical keyboard or precise mouse input | Computer | Familiar input can reduce accidental taps or typing mistakes |
| Your computer is old, resource-constrained, or rendering the game incorrectly | Compatible phone with the HireVue app | The app is optimized for the mobile experience |
| Your phone has a small or damaged screen | Computer | Small targets and visual details may be harder to control accurately |
| Your laptop battery, Wi-Fi, or browser is unreliable | Tested mobile device | A stable phone may be safer than an unstable computer |
| Your mobile signal changes frequently or notifications interrupt you | Computer on a stable connection | Reduced interruption risk |
| You need accessibility software or a particular input device | The tested compatible device | Confirm the setup or request an accommodation before the deadline |
The goal is not to select the device that seems most professional. The goal is to select the device on which the assessment loads correctly and your actions are deliberate.
Which Devices Does HireVue Support?
HireVue’s current device requirements list the following compatible options for interviews:
Computers
- Windows 10 or newer;
- macOS X 10.12 Sierra or newer;
- the latest version of Google Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge; or
- Safari 15 or newer.
HireVue identifies the latest Google Chrome as the recommended general browser for its computer interview flow. However, that general recommendation has an important game-specific exception: if Chrome or Edge produces blurry or distorted game elements, HireVue’s 2026 troubleshooting article recommends Firefox or Safari, or turning off hardware acceleration.
HireVue’s device page also says Chromium devices are not supported. Candidates using a Chromebook or another Chromium-based device should therefore confirm compatibility rather than assuming that the Chrome browser alone makes the device suitable.
Mobile Devices
HireVue currently lists:
- Android smartphones with a front-facing camera;
- Android 8.0 or later for the mobile app;
- Android 8.0 or later with the latest Chrome browser for mobile-browser use;
- iPhone or iPad with a front-facing camera;
- iOS 13 or later for the mobile app; and
- iOS 15 or later with Safari mobile 15 or later for browser use.
The official page recommends downloading the HireVue for Candidates app for the best mobile experience. The separate mobile game walkthrough confirms that game-based assessments can be completed on a mobile device and shows the same basic flow as the computer version: review the game list, watch or replay the instructions, start the game, view the level and remaining time, and pause when the interface allows it.
These are platform-wide requirements. Your particular invitation may contain an additional task that changes what you need. For example, a video interview section requires a working camera and microphone, while a typing-heavy or technical task may be easier on a computer.
When a Phone Is the Better Choice
A phone can be the stronger option when the device is compatible, the app is available, and you have already tested the controls.
1. The Mobile App Is Optimized for the Games
HireVue’s game troubleshooting article, updated in January 2026, identifies the HireVue mobile app as its top recommendation for completing game assessments when display issues occur. This is stronger evidence than the common assumption that a laptop is always technically safer.
2. Your Computer Has Rendering Problems
Some candidates see:
- blurry game elements;
- distorted characters;
- missing or poorly rendered components; or
- unstable animation.
HireVue says these issues most commonly affect Chrome or Edge on Windows devices with limited resources because of browser resource allocation. A compatible phone using the dedicated app can avoid that particular computer/browser combination.
3. Your Phone Is the More Reliable Device
A recent phone with a healthy battery and stable Wi-Fi may be more dependable than an old laptop that overheats, sleeps unexpectedly, or has unreliable browser extensions. Device category matters less than actual stability.
4. Touch Is Natural for the Task
Some visual-selection games may feel comfortable on a touchscreen. Direct tapping can be simpler than controlling a sensitive trackpad, especially when the candidate already practiced on the same screen.
Phone Risks to Check
A phone is not automatically problem-free. Check for:
- a small screen that makes details difficult to see;
- accidental taps near the edges;
- incoming calls, alarms, and notifications;
- automatic screen rotation;
- low battery or thermal throttling;
- switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data;
- a cracked or unresponsive touch area; and
- unfamiliar browser or app permissions.
Use Do Not Disturb, connect to power where practical, lock the preferred orientation if the app allows it, and place the phone on a stable surface. Do not hold it in one hand throughout a timed assessment if that reduces accuracy.
When a Computer Is the Better Choice
A compatible computer remains a sensible choice for many candidates, especially when it displays the practice correctly.
1. Larger Visual Area
Games involving grids, sequences, several moving elements, or small shapes may be easier to inspect on a larger screen. A larger display does not change the assessment, but it can reduce squinting and accidental selection.
2. Familiar Mouse and Keyboard Input
Use a computer when the task requires typing, repeated keyboard input, or precise pointer control and you are more accurate with those tools. A physical keyboard can also avoid mobile autocorrect or on-screen keyboard obstruction.
3. Easier Troubleshooting
On a computer, it is generally easier to:
- switch supported browsers;
- clear cache and cookies;
- disable extensions;
- change hardware-acceleration settings;
- connect through Ethernet;
- close background applications; and
- inspect browser permission settings.
4. Stable Power and Network
A plugged-in computer connected to reliable Wi-Fi or Ethernet can reduce battery and mobile-signal risk. The advantage only applies when the computer itself is stable and compatible.
Computer Risks to Check
Before choosing a computer, look for:
- corporate security software or a restrictive firewall;
- VPN or proxy interference;
- browser extensions that block scripts, cookies, media, or pop-ups;
- very high operating-system display scaling;
- browser zoom other than the normal level;
- multiple high-resource tabs or applications;
- Bluetooth keyboard or mouse battery risk;
- an unsupported operating system; and
- a Chromebook or other unsupported Chromium device.
A borrowed work computer can be less reliable than a personal phone if the company has locked browser permissions or blocks assessment domains.
HireVue App or Mobile Browser?
For mobile use, start with the HireVue for Candidates app when it is available for your device and region.
HireVue’s current position is consistent across two support pages:
- its device guide says the app provides the best mobile experience; and
- its game troubleshooting guide says the app is the top recommendation for game display reliability.
A supported mobile browser remains an option. Android candidates can use the latest Chrome on Android 8 or later, while Apple candidates can use Safari 15 or later on iOS 15 or later. Browser use may be convenient when you cannot install the app, but you should test the invitation link and permissions before the deadline.
Do not wait until the assessment is due to discover that:
- the app cannot be installed;
- the operating system is too old;
- the invitation code did not transfer into the app;
- Safari or Chrome permission was denied; or
- your organization prevents app installation.
The mobile OnDemand walkthrough explains that opening the Start or Practice link from the invitation should launch the app and populate the interview code. If it does not, the code can be entered from the invitation.
Practice on the Device You Plan to Use
The most useful device test is not a generic speed test. It is completing a representative practice round with the same screen, input method, browser or app, and network you intend to use.
Practicing on the final device helps reveal:
- whether game elements fit on the screen;
- whether browser zoom changes the layout;
- whether touch targets are easy to select;
- whether a trackpad creates accidental drags;
- whether the keyboard language is correct;
- whether instructions and sound play correctly;
- whether the screen dims or locks;
- whether notifications appear; and
- whether the connection remains stable for the expected duration.
Use free HireVue-style game practice to test your general comfort with the device, but remember that independent practice cannot verify the private technical configuration of your real invitation. Open the official invitation early enough to read its requirements and complete any available equipment or practice checks without entering the real assessment by mistake.
The preparation guide explains how to separate rule learning, accuracy practice, pacing, and a final device rehearsal.
Device Checklist Before You Start
Complete this checklist before the assessment is due.
Hardware
- The device meets HireVue’s current operating-system requirements.
- The screen is undamaged and easy to read.
- The mouse, trackpad, touchscreen, and keyboard respond correctly.
- The device is connected to power or has enough battery.
- The camera and microphone work if the invitation includes video questions.
- Headphones, Bluetooth devices, or external peripherals are charged and tested if used.
Browser or App
- The browser is supported and updated.
- The HireVue app is updated if using mobile.
- Browser zoom is set to a normal readable level.
- Unnecessary extensions are disabled.
- The assessment domain is not blocked by privacy or script-blocking tools.
- Camera and microphone permissions are correct for any video section.
- You have not opened the same assessment in multiple active windows.
Connection
HireVue’s current general device page lists a minimum connection of 100 kbps and a recommended connection of 350 kbps for OnDemand interviews. Those figures are technical minimums, not a reason to use a marginal network. Stability matters more than a brief peak result.
- Use the most stable available connection.
- Move close to the Wi-Fi access point if necessary.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and streaming.
- Ask other users not to saturate the network during the assessment.
- Keep an alternative network available when possible.
- Avoid changing networks during an active game unless troubleshooting requires it.
Environment
- Silence notifications and incoming calls.
- Close unnecessary tabs and applications.
- Prevent automatic sleep and screen locking.
- Place the device on a stable surface.
- Allow enough uninterrupted time to finish.
- Keep the invitation and support route accessible on a separate note or device.
Why Are My HireVue Games Blurry or Distorted?
HireVue’s current game-specific support article lists three solutions in priority order.
Option 1: Use the HireVue Mobile App
This is HireVue’s top recommendation for game assessments on mobile. It is specifically optimized for the games.
Option 2: Use Firefox or Safari on a Computer
HireVue says Firefox and Safari can load and display the games more reliably because they rely more on software or browser-based resource allocation and less on the computer’s hardware specifications.
This advice is specifically for the game display issue. It does not mean Chrome is unsupported. Chrome remains a supported and generally recommended browser for the broader interview flow.
Option 3: Disable Hardware Acceleration in Chrome or Edge
For Chrome, enter:
chrome://settings/system
For Edge, enter:
edge://settings/system
Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, then fully restart the browser. Make this change before beginning the real assessment rather than experimenting during a timed game.
Do not change multiple unrelated settings at once. Test after each major change so you know which configuration works.
What If a HireVue Game Will Not Load?
Use a cautious sequence.
- Read the message on screen. A permission error, unsupported-device message, blank game area, and network timeout require different fixes.
- Record evidence. Take a screenshot or photo and note the time, game name, browser or app, device, and connection.
- Wait briefly for a temporary load. Do not click repeatedly or open several copies of the assessment.
- Close unnecessary applications and tabs. Free memory and processing resources.
- Use HireVue’s game display recommendations. Try the mobile app, Firefox or Safari, or the hardware-acceleration fix as appropriate.
- Use another supported network or device if support instructions allow it. Close the frozen session before opening the link elsewhere.
- Contact Candidate Support. Explain the steps already attempted and include the screenshot and invitation details.
Avoid creating a second candidate account or using a different email address to obtain another attempt. That can create duplicate records without resolving the original invitation.
What If the Browser or App Freezes?
HireVue’s computer and mobile troubleshooting pages suggest refreshing or reopening, switching supported browsers or devices, restarting the device, changing the connection, and contacting its support team if the issue continues.
There is an important warning: refreshing a frozen interview may cause progress that has not yet uploaded to be lost. Earlier responses may already be saved, but some content may need to be completed again. For that reason:
- capture the error before refreshing when possible;
- do not repeatedly refresh;
- do not assume the current game will resume at the same level;
- close the frozen browser page before opening the link in another browser; and
- contact support when you are uncertain whether the submission was saved.
On mobile, HireVue suggests force-closing and reopening the app, switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data, restarting the device, or changing devices. Its older frozen-app guide mentions deleting and reinstalling the app, but its newer upload troubleshooting guide explicitly warns not to uninstall the app while uploads are pending, because recorded responses could be lost. Follow the newer warning whenever an upload is incomplete.
What Should You Do If a Problem Happens During the Real Assessment?
Use this response sequence:
1. Stop Random Clicking
Repeated clicks can submit an unintended answer or create several browser sessions. Pause and identify what changed.
2. Capture the Error
Record:
- the exact message;
- the time;
- the game or section;
- the device and operating system;
- browser or app version;
- network type; and
- the last completed action.
3. Follow the Official Troubleshooting Route
Use the invitation’s support link or HireVue Candidate Help Center. Explain which steps you have already tried.
4. Inform the Hiring Company When a Retake May Be Required
HireVue’s restart policy says only the hiring company can authorize a complete new attempt, whether the assessment is already completed or still in progress and needs to restart from the beginning. HireVue support can help with the platform but cannot approve the retake.
5. Do Not Assume Silence Means Failure
A technical issue does not reveal the employer’s decision. Keep the evidence, follow the support process, and ask the hiring company to confirm next steps when necessary.
Final Recommendation
HireVue games can be completed on supported phones and computers. Choose based on tested reliability rather than a blanket rule.
Use the HireVue mobile app when:
- you want HireVue’s currently recommended mobile experience;
- Chrome or Edge on Windows displays blurry or distorted game elements;
- your compatible phone is more stable than your computer; or
- touch controls are comfortable and already tested.
Use a computer when:
- you benefit from a larger display;
- a physical keyboard or mouse improves control;
- Firefox or Safari displays the games correctly;
- you need easier browser or network troubleshooting; or
- the invitation includes another task better suited to a computer.
Whichever device you choose, update it, test the exact input method, silence interruptions, use a stable connection, and complete a practice round before assessment day. The right device is the one that lets you focus on the rules and responses instead of the technology.
