Are HireVue Interviews Reviewed by AI or Humans?

Understand HireVue AI assessment, recruiter review and hiring decisions, what transcript-based scoring evaluates, and what your invitation needs to explain.

Quick answer

AI assessment and human review can both be part of a HireVue hiring process. Recording an answer does not, by itself, establish that AI scores it. HireVue describes transcript-based scoring for AI-scored video assessments, while employers make hiring decisions. Check your invitation and notices for the process used for your role; do not assume every recording receives the same review.

Separate recording, scoring and the hiring decision

When candidates ask “are HireVue interviews reviewed by AI?”, several different questions can be hidden inside the phrase. Was an answer recorded? Was software used to assess it? What information did a recruiter review? Who decides the next step? These are not interchangeable.

LayerWhat it describesWhat you cannot infer from it alone
Recording or transcriptionCapturing an answer or converting speech to textThat an AI model assigns a competency score
Assessment or reviewEvaluating evidence against role-relevant criteriaThat every role uses the same model or that a person watches every second
Recruitment decisionThe employer choosing its next stepThat an independent practice result predicts the outcome

HireVue's candidate FAQ places interviews and assessments within the broader recruitment process and identifies people as making hiring decisions. That is not a promise about exactly how much of each recording each reviewer watches. Use the employer's notices to understand your own application.

What does AI-scored video assessment evaluate?

HireVue's current Our Science explanation describes AI-scored video assessment as evaluating the transcript of an answer against job-related competencies. It says facial expressions, body language, appearance, background and tone of voice are not inputs to that answer scoring. This is a statement about the described scoring, not a description of every HireVue product or every other data-handling step.

For preparation, the useful question is whether a listener or reader can understand your evidence. Explain the situation enough to make your action meaningful, state what you personally did, and describe the outcome honestly. There is no basis here for prescribing a smile frequency, accent, camera-gaze pattern or special list of words that guarantees a result.

Integrity checks are a separate question

“Not scored on appearance” does not mean “no image or activity can be captured.” HireVue's October 2026 explanation separates transcript-based scoring from integrity measures such as candidate image capture and browser-focus tracking. It also explains that a flag should lead to review, not be treated as automatic proof of misconduct.

Read the conduct and privacy notices before starting, especially if you use assistive tools or need an accommodation. For the distinction between sharing screen content and recording tab or window changes, use the screen-sharing and tracking guide. Trying to infer a scoring model from a camera light or a permission prompt will not answer that question.

Prepare evidence, not a keyword performance

The following is an independently written editing example, not a reported employer question, a HireVue rubric or an illustration of an actual score.

Too general: “I am collaborative and analytical. I always communicate well and solve problems for the team.”

More informative: “During a student project, two teammates were working from different versions of the data. I compared the files, documented the differences and asked the group to agree on one source. We reran the analysis before the presentation. I learned to confirm shared assumptions earlier.”

The second version gives the reviewer something concrete to understand. Its value comes from the action and explanation, not from repeating “collaborative” more often. It still needs to be truthful and relevant to the question. If the example did not happen to you, do not use it as your own story.

Use the preparation worksheet to organise your real experiences, and the answer-length guide to edit them within the limit you are actually given. This article is about understanding review, not another full general preparation course.

Check what your invitation explains

Before an assessment, look for an explanation of its format, the use of AI or assessment information, the hiring organisation's privacy notice, and a contact for questions. Keep the employer, programme and country in view: an account of someone else's interview cannot establish your settings.

If the description is unclear, ask a specific question such as: “Does this stage use automated assessment, and where can I read how that information is used alongside recruiter review?” If you need an alternative or an accessibility arrangement, ask for the appropriate official process before the deadline. Do not assume a universal alternative, approval or extension is automatically available.

A detailed public explanation helps you ask informed questions. It cannot reveal an employer's private model weights, benchmarks, ranking thresholds or individual review choices. We do not supply guesses about those details as if they were confirmed scoring instructions.

Keep practice feedback in its proper role

HireVueGames is an independent preparation product, not HireVue and not your employer's assessment. Its feedback can help you check relevance, structure, specificity, evidence and clarity. A higher practice result means neither that you passed a real assessment nor that a recruiter will make a particular decision.

You can rehearse in writing or with local video. In this site's video practice, video stays in your browser; only bounded audio is temporarily sent when you request transcription. Reviewed text is used for practice feedback. Those are this product's boundaries, not a statement about the data flow of an official HireVue interview. Check each service's own explanation before you use it.

FAQ

Is every HireVue interview scored by AI?

A HireVue recording alone does not establish AI scoring. Read the assessment description and notices for your application, and ask the hiring company if the review process is unclear.

Does HireVue score facial expressions or tone of voice?

HireVue's current explanation of AI-scored video assessments says scoring uses what the candidate says, not facial expressions, body language, appearance, surroundings or tone. Separate integrity checks may use other signals; they are not the same as answer-content scoring.

Will a recruiter watch my whole recording?

The hiring company controls its review workflow. Public product descriptions do not establish whether a person watches every answer in full, uses assessment information, or combines different review steps for your role.

Is my practice score the score an employer would give me?

No. HireVueGames provides independent coaching on answer content. It does not have the employer's model, benchmarks or decision criteria, and its feedback is not an official score, percentile or hiring prediction.
