Four different situations people call a retake
A search for “HireVue retake” can mean rehearsal, another recording of the current answer, going back to a submitted question, or restarting the whole interview. Identify which one you need before looking for a button. This editorial decision table separates them; it is not a promise that every invitation has the same controls.
| Situation | What to check | Who controls the next step? |
|---|---|---|
| Official practice question | That the screen clearly identifies practice mode | Use the practice controls provided |
| Current assessed answer, before submission | Whether an additional attempt is explicitly offered | The employer's settings and on-screen instructions |
| Response already submitted | Do not assume you can return and replace it | Contact the hiring company if another interview is needed |
| Complete restart, including an interview still in progress | Whether the hiring company has approved a new attempt | The hiring company, not an independent practice site |
HireVue's restart guidance states the submitted-question restriction and the employer-approval requirement. A technical-support conversation and permission to begin the interview again are not automatically the same thing.
Read the real-question attempt controls
HireVue's computer practice walkthrough explains that the attempt count shown for real questions is a setting chosen by the recruiter. Do not transfer “two attempts” or “three attempts” from a screenshot, another company or a previous recruiting cycle to your invitation.
The official practice FAQ describes repeatable generic practice questions. That helps you learn the software, but it does not grant extra attempts on assessed questions. It also does not describe free-access rules on HireVueGames, which is a separate preparation product.
Before starting, read the displayed preparation time, response limit, attempt allowance and submission controls together. If an instruction is unclear, ask through the official help route rather than entering a real question just to explore what happens.
Check these points before the final allowed attempt
Use this preparation checklist when the actual interface permits another recording:
- Identify what you want to improve: relevance, a missing action, an unclear result or a technical problem.
- Confirm that the camera, microphone and connection are ready before choosing the next recording.
- Read what the screen says about keeping, replacing or submitting an answer. Do not assume every version lets you choose between recordings afterwards.
- Answer the question you were given instead of adding a second unrelated story.
- Leave room to finish naturally inside the displayed limit; you do not need to fill every second.
If the device is the problem, use the camera and microphone troubleshooting guide. If the answer is too long, use the answer-length guide. Neither guide authorises a new attempt.
When the problem is a freeze, upload or submitted answer
Capture the time, error, question or stage and what the screen now says. A frozen page, an upload still running and a completed submission need different responses. Do not interpret reopening the same invitation as proof that an earlier response was erased or that a new attempt was granted.
HireVue's frozen-browser article warns that unuploaded progress can be lost during recovery. Its upload guidance specifically warns against uninstalling the mobile app while responses await upload. Use the official steps for your exact stage, not refreshing as a way to gain another recording.
Technical recovery may require dealing with an unfinished response. That is different from freely replacing a response already submitted. Support can investigate a fault, while the hiring company decides a request for a complete new interview or a deadline adjustment.
Ask for a restart clearly and honestly
The following is an original message outline, not a guarantee of approval:
Subject: Interview technical issue — request for guidance
I am applying for [role/programme]. At [time and time zone], during [stage], I encountered [exact error]. I have tried [brief steps]. The current screen shows [status], and I am unsure whether the response uploaded. Could you advise the next step and, if necessary, whether a new interview can be authorised?
Use the contact in your invitation or the employer's careers site. Keep the message factual; do not claim a technical error if the actual reason is that you would prefer to rewrite an answer. Share private invitation identifiers only through the official channel. A request does not automatically extend the deadline, approve a retake or determine how the employer evaluates the situation.
Rehearse without trying to reset the real assessment
Before assessment day, rehearse one genuine example, check whether your personal contribution is clear, and make one useful revision. You can practise the explanation in writing or with a private recording instead of repeatedly entering the employer's live assessment. Review the instructions again when you are ready to begin.
Our interview preparation guide provides a story-building method. HireVueGames offers independent practice feedback, not control over another platform's attempts. Practising here cannot reopen an employer's questions, change its timers or tell you whether a recruiter will approve another interview.
FAQ
Can I go back to a previous HireVue question?
HireVue's restart guidance says you cannot return to a question after submitting its response. Requesting a complete new interview is a different action and requires the hiring company's approval.
Do official practice questions use my real attempts?
Official practice questions are separate rehearsal questions. Their repeatability does not establish the attempts available for assessed questions; read the real-question attempt instructions before beginning.
Does opening the invitation again reset the interview?
No reset should be assumed. Reopening may resume the existing process rather than create a new attempt. Do not repeatedly reopen or refresh to try to change the limits.
Does re-recording lower my score?
There is no universal public deduction rule established by the sources used here. That does not guarantee no effect in every employer workflow. Follow the permitted controls and ask the hiring company about its process if needed.
